Learning through Landscapes

Learning through Landscapes (LTL)
is a national charity that works with schools, organisations
and individuals across the UK to help them improve and develop
their school grounds. The LTL website forms a vital part of
the organisations effort to provide information to a wide audience
on all issues related to school grounds.
Design Haus helped to formulate a
strategy that would recognize the diverse audience the charity
has. Through the 'Explore LTL' area of the site LTL are able
to target content for specific types of visitors based on what
work they do and where they are in the UK.
The Learning through Landscapes (LTL)
site had a number of design challenges for the Design Haus
team. The most difficult was the extremely diverse audience
and the fact that the site was seen as an integral part of
providing information and resources to each of these different
groups. Design Haus proposed a unique navigation for the 'Explore
LTL' area that created a 'matrix' using a map of the UK and
a list of audience types. A visitor can retrieve information
suited to where they are in the UK as well as targeting their
profession.
Other unique features of the site
includes a clean, easy-to-follow design that allows LTL to
showcase content through pictures and updateable copy. The
bright colour and easy to use navigation has prompted a number
of positive comments from LTL members.

Some of the Technical challenges
and features of the new Learning through Landscapes (LTL) site
includes:
Extensive
Content Management - The
LTL project pushed the boundries of previous CM programming
to include the option of placing images into copy with an associated
ALT tag, links to uploaded documents (with document control
in place for public/private documents) as well as style application,
email and web links.
Highlights - To be able to highlight
case-studies/partners on various pages thoughout the site based
on a random selection from a specific pool. Case studies in
particular were to be selected from a pool based on location
to show relevant information to the section of the site viewed.
Members
area - A collection of information
available for members who subscribe to the charity, all updatable
by staff at LTL. When members log into the web-site, the system
recognises when they previously signed in and informs them
of any new members content that has been added.
Document
control - LTL Staff can
upload documents, categorise them and set them an access level
so that the document can be publically available, basic details
needed for downloading or for full members only.
Text
Only - Every public page has
an alternative, text only, page that can be viewed by visitors
who might need such a page. As some of the dynamic content
can have images placed within their copy the code needed to
remove these graphics but to leave the contents of the ALT
tag, to describe the image that had been in place
Print Only - Pages with the
most useful of information have a print friendly page available
with all forms of navigation removed to produce a "clean" document
for printing.

Visit
the website

"Learning through Landscapes
is the national school grounds charity with a variety of potential
audiences, and as such required a very versatile website. We
needed it to serve as both a resource centre for our members
and an inspiration to those interested in developing their outdoor
environments. Design Haus have proved to be the perfect partner
for us. They have been flexible, positive, and imaginative in
consultation. As an adjunct to this their work rests on cracking
design and technical implementation. We're going back for more..."
